The expression, “Picture postcard perfect” describes Maleny, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, perfectly. In fact, you will find postcards of Maleny taken from the hills at the back of the town that make you wonder if such a beautiful place actually exists. Well, it does. Maleny is in the Blackall Range overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains. At an elevation of about 1500 feet (450 meters) above sea level, it is a subtropical haven in tropical Queensland.
Not surprisingly, Maleny’s main industry is tourism. Situated just 56 miles (90km) north of Brisbane and 46 miles (75km) from Noosa Heads in the Sunshine Coast, Maleny is easy to get to. When you are there, you’ll absolutely love it. Over the years, Maleny has gone through many incarnations. During its early history, it was a logging town. Then it turned into a dairy town. The logging activity ended long ago, but a lot of dairy farms remain. However, Maleny started being discovered by an eclectic group of people who simply wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and back to nature.
Back to nature is where you will be whenever you visit Maleny. While there are some fantastic places to explore within the town itself, surrounded by nature as you are, you will want venture out and explore. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to do that in and around Maleny.
Maleny is a perfect spot to base yourself if you would like to get out and explore the countryside on foot or on a mountain bike. One great place to go to just near Maleny is Kondalilla National Park. The word “Kondalilla” is an aboriginal word that more or less translates as “rushing waters.” That ought to give you a clue as to what to expect to find in the Park. Kondalilla Falls plunges 300 vertical feet (90 meters) directly down into the valley below. One of the local’s favorite things to do on a hot summer’s day is go to the rock pool on the head of the falls and cool off.
The Blackall Range is sprinkled with towns like Maleny. Kenilworth, for instance, is a charming village that was voted Queensland’s Friendliest Village in 2000. Kenilworth’s neighbors like Maleny and Montville deserve to share that crown. They’re all relaxing, friendly towns whose local populations seem to be made up of creative people. Each town has interesting arts and crafts shops, fresh farm grown organic produce and great cafes and restaurants that feature healthy and delicious meals.
Your Maleny accommodation will be an example of local craftsmanship. You will not be staying in a bland motel by the side of a noisy highway when you’re in Maleny. In fact, you could possibly find yourself staying in a magnificently appointed treehouse overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains or in a sumptuous cabin on a hill with your own private spa to enjoy. In addition to the locals’ artistic eye, they are passionate environmentalists. Your accommodation will be perfectly maintained but will blend into the environment, making you feel completely at peace with the world, just as the locals seem to be.

“Blue Christmas” is a Christmas song written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson. The heart-broken tale of unrequited love during the holidays had long been considered a Christmas staple of country music, having been recorded by Ernest Tubb in 1948. In 1957, Elvis Presley effectively made “Blue Christmas” a steadfast rock-and-roll holiday classic by recording it in his signature style. The song has since been recorded by a host of rock and country artists alike, as well as those of other genres. Mel Blanc’s Porky Pig version is my personal fave. The Bar Stoolz of Huron, Ohio will be performing their version along with other songs of a more eclectic nature on the Saturday evening after Christmas “08″ at the legendary Sand Bar.
